The government has decided to set up a 7,000 MW nuclear power plant fully built on indigenous basis. In the meeting of the Cabinet Committee chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, the decision to plant nuclear power plants with 10 pressure heavywater reactors was stamped. According to the decision, 10 units of 700 MW capacity will be set up, under which order orders of Rs 70,000 crore will come out.

Giving details of the Cabinet decision, Power, Coal, Minister of New and Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal said that the establishment of a 7,000 MW nuclear power plant will provide employment to 33,400 people directly and indirectly.

At present, the country's nuclear power plant has a capacity of 6,780 MW and 22 nuclear power plants are underway. However, no deadline has been set for establishing the proposed 7,000 MW power plants.

New coal linkage policy will provide cheap electricity
On Wednesday, the Cabinet Committee approved the New Coal Linkage Policy with the objective to provide electricity at affordable rates to the common people. Under the new policy, the government will make FSA with these plants to ensure supply of coal to the 28,000 MW power plants deprived of the fuel supply agreement (FSA).

These are the power plants, which have the Letter of Assurance (LOA) issued by the government for FSA but due to lack of coal, the FSA was not done with them. Now Coal India Limited will do FSA with them. Most of these plants will be ready by 2021-22.
